Father-of-2 and beloved Miami Beach restaurant manager miraculously survives hit-and-run

In August, RJ Otero was driving along Julia Tuttle Causeway when he was hit by a black SUV. The SUV driver then fled on foot and was not caught.

Otero, who is the manager of Miami Beach kosher cafe Tasti Beach Cafe, was then placed in a medically induced coma, fighting for his life – and his wife, Natalie, fought alongside him every day.

“It’s scary to think I was actually in that car after seeing the after photos,” he says.

Otero, father of two and loving husband, miraculously thwarted the odds. “I love them with all my heart and soul and can’t wait to get out of here,” he said.

After the accident, his car was completely destroyed. And even though he was nearly killed, he just wants the person responsible to come forward.

“I forgive you, but please come forward,” he said.

Otero was on his way to work at the Tasti Beach Cafe in Miami Beach around 7 a.m. on Wednesday, August 4, when his car was hit. And now, weeks later, he was able to say hello to his colleagues and customers for the first time.

“Thank goodness for this thing here, this tracheostomy, which allows me to speak,” he says. “The little things you take for granted until something changes your life.”

Otero’s message to anyone going through a struggle is to be patient and persistent because miracles happen.
