Good news for lovers of tacos and burritos, since the group of Mexican restaurants Tortilla has confirmed the opening of a branch in the city center. The new restaurant is due to open in East Gates, opposite the entrance to Highcross Shopping Centre, later this year.
Tortilla, which has more than 45 stores nationwide, serves what it describes as “customizable, authentic California-style Mexican cuisine.” According to a spokesperson for the brand, it offers dishes adapted to “all tastes, desires and dietary requirements”.
Whether ordering dine-in, take-out or via click-and-collect or delivery, customers can compose their own meal with a choice of fresh and tasty toppings. These include Mexican rice, black beans, grilled and stewed meats, and organic vegan chili, as well as fresh salsa and “hand-crushed” guacamole, prepared daily in-store.

The new restaurant in Leicester will be split over two floors and will seat around 30 customers. It is expected to create around 25 jobs, the company confirmed to LeicestershireLive.
Described as the UK’s largest ‘fast-casual’ Mexican restaurant brand, Tortilla was founded in October 2007 by Brandon and Jen Stephens. The couple, from California, had spent the past four years searching across London to find burritos and tacos comparable to those they had enjoyed at taquerias in San Francisco’s Mission District.
Having been unable to find the same type of places in London, they decided to create a place themselves. Speaking about the new opening, Richard Morris, CEO of Tortilla, told LeicestershireLive: “We can’t wait to bring our brand to Leicester, a place we’ve been looking for for some time.
“We have a fantastic location in the city center that will provide locals and visitors to the city with a convenient and delicious place for lunch, dinner or after-work drinks. We look forward to welcoming many satisfied customers in shop and play our part in this thriving local community.
