Popular Monmouth County restaurant chain changes hands; expansion, franchises and food truck in the near future

After 60 years of ownership, a popular chain of Monmouth County hot dog restaurants has changed hands.

The windmill was acquired by the Epstein family in late October.

The new owner plans to invest heavily in improving the physical appearance of the restaurants and expanding the chain’s five locations that serve Jersey Shore locals and visitors to Asbury Park, Belmar, North Long Branch, Red Bank and the West End of Long Branch. He even plans to launch a food truck in 2023, which will enhance the company’s catering capabilities and bring the WindMill’s signature food to a wider area of the region. Franchise opportunities are also in the potential future.

The WindMill serves locals and visitors alike the delicious and familiar cuisine of New Jersey’s best hot dogs, hamburgers, cheese fries and more.

The Epsteins will maintain the menu and charm that have characterized WindMill restaurants for decades.

“I remember the excitement of visiting WindMill restaurants throughout my childhood, and it’s a wonderful opportunity to play a part in preserving and improving this local tradition – curating the menu, the ingredients and signature WindMill cooking techniques, and adding new options to the menu,” said Ralph Epstein, President of WindMill Restaurant Group. “We are especially looking forward to several exciting business enhancements that will enhance the WindMill experience for our customers.”

Over the next few months, the Epstein family plans to renovate the interior and exterior of the buildings and extend opening hours.

Epstein added: “Our family has been involved in New Jersey hospitality businesses for decades and we understand what a privilege it is to become stewards of an institution like WindMill Restaurants. In the months and years to come, we will invest in the channel to unlock its latent potential and maintain its vitality for generations to come.

Since establishing its first location in 1963, WindMill Restaurants has earned a reputation on the Jersey Shore as an unparalleled destination for “gourmet fast food.” The chain has served politicians and celebrities, including Governor Christine Todd Whitman and Bruce Springsteen, and hosted thousands of weddings and other events at various venues, including the Stone Pony and Yankee Stadium.
