FOLSOM, Calif. (KTXL) – The general manager of a popular Folsom restaurant receives a real lesson Monday night on what it means to bring a community together.
At Scott’s Seafood Roundhouse in Folsom, everyone is part of the family.
âWhere everyone knows your name and is always happy that you came,â CEO Tim Hughes explained through a song. “That’s kind of how Scott is.”
Hughes was unable to go to work last month.
âThe next thing you know, I wake up and have a hole in my head,â Hughes said.
Hughes noticed something was wrong at work last month. His family took him to the hospital.
âBrain tumor. This led to my stroke,â explained Hughes.
In the hospital for 11 days following his stroke, the news quickly spread to his employees. To make matters worse, Hughes’ wife has also been battling cancer for seven years.
âNo one should be going through what we are going through,â said Hughes.
For employee Jessica Nichols, the news was devastating.
âHe’s much more than a boss. He’s my second dad, âNichols explained.
For the past 15 years, the restaurant has been a home from home for Tim Hughes, so it was no surprise that his employees immediately stepped in to help him during his tough times.
âI just wanted to take everything out of the family’s hands and just be family together and not have to worry about anything,â Nichols explained.
A day after Hughes’ stroke, Nichols started a Meal Train and created an account for people to donate to the Hughes family. In one month, the community has donated over $ 5,000 and continues to bring food to the family on a daily basis.
âAnd Jess,â Hughes said, pointing a thumbs up. âYou are my right arm and you know it. Thank you.”
Even though Hughes can’t work at the restaurant right now, he knows he has a long way to go as he prepares for six weeks of radiation and chemotherapy.
âIt’s a 15 round fight and I’m in round 1. Ding – Let’s go,â Hughes said.
